Sunday 27th May 2012 – walking **** sunny then rain

We had great fun watching the hikers set out to reach the summit (we assume)of the Pic du Canigou:) The Spanish party were off pretty quickly but the 9 French people were hilarious and took absolutely ages to get organised. We decided to hike up to a Croix which was signposted as being 3.5km away. It was a good path for most of the way because it followed the forest/cycle track and we were able to watch the hikers going up a snowy part of the track on their way to the summit through binoculars. Also surprised to see people on bikes on the really rough track going down! I did get a bit cheesed off at one point because the signs let us down again and he thought we were going the wrong way but it was ok we ended up at the cross and decided to go a bit further up to the peak which was quite close by. We saw a marmotte on the way up Reached the refuge at the top – it is called Pla Guillem. It is a beautiful day which is great but made it a bit hot for walking so we were pleased to reach the top and have our lunch. We had taken our books so read for a bit and watched a vulture soaring overhead. When we looked round the cloud had come round both sides of the peak and was rolling over the grass, coming to get us! Very spooky. It also started to thunder again – it is always between 1 and 2 p.m. – third day running. Stopped at the cross again as we passed and took another photo just to show the difference an hour in the mountains can make – one full sunshine and one in white cloud! We came down a quicker way but with about a km to go it started to rain and this time we did get drenched! Back to the van to change and have a drink and some bread and jam before leaving the Pic du Canigou (with all the hikers still up there somewhere) shrouded in cloud :( Set off down the rocky road which we measured as being 3 ½ miles! Drove to McDonalds at Prades and had a frustrating Wi-Fi session because face book wouldn’t upload the photos :( We did have an ice cream sundae though :) As we left there Mag noticed 3 camper vans parked by a duck pond so we decided to join them instead of wasting diesel driving round trying to find somewhere as it had gone 7pm. Parked up and had an omelette, using up most of the food we have left. Hoping shop open tomorrow but another bank holiday so who knows!!
